An enlightening session by noble laureate professor Barry C, Barish
Detection of gravitational waves in the cosmos- an enlightening session by noble laureate professor Barry C, Barish 11. 5. 2022 Kundan Vidya Mandir civil lines Ludhiana new generation CBSE school is always in four front to take great initiative for the students and society at large and one such initiative is distinguished lecture series. As a part of this series today the Kundanites along with many students of various schools of Ludhiana had the privilege to meet the Nobel laureate professor Barry C Barish Virtually. Dr. Rajan Gupta, member of Shri Kundan Lal Trust and a scientist of great repute in America arranged the session. The school principal Mr A.P. Sharma introduced the resource person to the audience. It was indeed a momentous and quite informative session wherein the students of classes X and XII and their teachers were apprised of the fact that one consequence of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity is the existence of gravitational waves. These are like ripples in a four-dimensional spacetime that occur when objects with mass accelerate. The effects are very small. Beginning in the 1970s the LIGO detector was developed to record gravitational waves. Barry Barish had a leading role in the project from 1994 and made crucial contributions to the development of the detector. In 2015 gravitational waves were detected for the first time. Students also got to know that due to the merger of two black holes into one the energy ws released in the form of gravitational waves and the gravitational waves are also produced by a single spinning massive object like a neutron star. Students are always curious to know about the universe and they had n number of queries. The school vice principal Mrs Sonia Verma helped in arranging the question answer session. Such lectures would surely inspire the students to opt for the research as a promising career. The science H.O.D. Mrs Jasdeep Uppal expressed the gratitude and proposed a vote of thanks.
